Prevalence of Suicidal Ideation and Associated Risk Factors Among College Students: Eritrea

Background: College is a time when many young adults feel pressure to develop identities, life goals, and make meaningful relationships. Internal conflicts can these complex social events, academic roles, extracurricular activities conflict with an individual’s beliefs or schedule have been correlated higher rates of depression, increase the risk suicide. Since there are no studies conducted examine predictors suicide ideation in Eritrea, it problematic formulation effective intervention strategies. So, identification will contribute implementation practical measures. Objective: The purpose study assess suicidal its related factors among college students Eritrea. Method: 466 participants were selected from total number 6929 population who undergraduate attending school November 2017. They using stratified sampling method allocated 7 colleges which considered as stratum Proportional allocation. Data was collected five WHO based questions (MDI, AUDIT, MSPSS, MSSI, HADS) analyzed Descriptive statistic such frequencies, percentages, well Analytical statistics chi-square, logistic regression analysis used prevalence ideation; 5% level significance. Result: overall occurrence ideations sample 25.9%. identified anxiety, alcohol abuse perceived support, religious activity satisfaction credit hours assigned significantly associated they found be protective factors.
